Celebrating Irish-Style

Even though St. Patrick’s Day is on a weekday this year, there will be plenty of celebrations in town.

Starting at 11 a.m., Sofia, on the corner of 11th and H streets downtown, is celebrating big. There’s no cover for the event, which includes an outdoor barbecue, traditional Irish fare and multiple drink specials: $2 green beers, $3 Magners Irish cider on tap, $4 shots of Jameson, $6 Irish Car Bombs and $12 pitchers of Guinness. Also expect to play some Irish drinking games, keeping your eyes peeled for the drunken leprechaun!

Also starting early is the block party at De Vere’s Irish Pub at 1521 L Street. Yes, the city is actually closing down an entire block for the festivities. Admittance is free from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and at 10 a.m. the official party begins. Tickets are $25 at the door. Be ready for live bands (Tainted Love, The Silent Comedy, Nine-8ths Irish, to name a few), local Irish dancers, a full outdoor food tent, a whiskey tent, street-side bars and beer gardens featuring Ireland’s best brews. Twenty-six beer taps will keep party-goers filled to the brim.

Brew it Up at 14th and H streets is also hosting a big Irish bash starting at 11 a.m. There’s no cover to attend the party, which includes traditional Irish pub fare (corned beef and cabbage, beer-steamed mussels, limerick ham sandwiches, bangers and mash, lamb stew, Irish cheddar with broccoli soup, shepherd’s pie, Dublin coddle), an outdoor beer garden and bar starting at 2 p.m., Celtic and Irish music all day, and a performance by Nine-8ths Irish from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. You’ll find 16 ounce drafts of stouts, lagers and ales for $3; Irish whiskey shooter specials; and many Irish cocktails, such as Green Mists and Car Bombs, from $3 to $5.

Brownie’s Lounge—5858 South Land Park Drive—will have the traditional corned beef and cabbage fare, and from what I hear, the St. Patty’s décor is now a staple.

Jamie’s Broadway Grille, at 427 Broadway, is also holding a St. Patty’s Day party with live music, corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew and a Rueben sandwich.
