Cancer as a Turning Point Conference

If you are dealing with cancer, or know someone who is, there’s a very special conference coming up Saturday and Sunday Sept. 8–9.

“Cancer as a Turning Point: From Surviving to Thriving” is the brainchild of Jan Adrian, herself a cancer survivor. Adrian founded the conference to provide other patients/survivors as well as caregivers the emotional, spiritual and psychological support she believes is vital not only to surviving but for living a full, rich life regardless of illness. Adrian is the founder of the nonprofit organization Healing Journeys, which “seeks to activate the cancer-healing process by supporting and empowering the person with cancer, instead of attacking the cancer itself.”

The conference will feature motivational speakers, music and more. Topics include Creating a Body That Cancer Doesn’t Like; The Journey of Faith: A Spiritual Guide for Caregivers; and The Power of Healing Music. Acclaimed inspirational speaker Marianne Williamson, the conference’s keynote speaker, will be speaking about Spiritual Beings on a Human Path.

Attendance is free, though donations are gladly accepted. Registered nurses, marriage and family therapists and licensed clinical social workers can earn continuing education credits by attending the conference. (An extra charge does apply.) Though the deadline to order lunch has passed, attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch and stay to connect with patients, caregivers and others in attendance.

“Cancer as a Turning Point: From Surviving to Thriving,” which is sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and Mercy Cancer Institute, takes place at the Scottish Rite Center, 6151 H St. in Sacramento and runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with book signing by Williamson at 5 p.m. on Saturday) and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

By the way, the conference is not exclusively for those dealing with cancer. People dealing with AIDS, heart disease, diabetes and even those who are disease-free but interested in the topics are welcome to attend.

I met Jan Adrian several years ago in a group study I was involved in. She is reason alone to attend the conference; looking at the list of other speakers/topics makes it even more compelling.
