Bake Sale at the Capitol

Make hump-day Wednesday a little nicer with a sweet treat. Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary holds its annual summer bake sale (yes, I know, it’s still spring, but some of these days have been feeling like summer) on May 23. The sale takes place outside the north entrance security doors of the State Capitol, near 11th and L streets, and runs from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The “sale” is actually donation based, but please, give generously. Happy Tails is an all-volunteer no-kill animal rescue organization. That money you spend on a brownie or cookie is literally helping to save homeless cats and dogs in our area. See? Great excuse to break the diet for a day! Or, if you prefer not to indulge, surely someone you know will appreciate a cupcake pick-me-up.

I don’t have a list of what will be on hand as far as goodies. However, at past sales, there has been a wide assortment of treats: brownies, cookies, cupcakes. One volunteer usually makes a to-die-for buttery coffee cake. Yum! And last year, my dear sister-in-law made a beautiful carrot cake. I’ve also seen vegan treats on hand, and I am going to ask my brother if he has time to make something diabetic-friendly.

We will see how much success I have in that, but whatever treats are for sale, know that they were baked with love by a dedicated Happy Tails volunteer (or friend of a volunteer) and that your dollars benefit a wonderful cause!
