Those who missed the SAMMIES last year had a good reason: It didn’t happen! Thankfully, this year the uber-popular Sacramento Area Music Awards event—which is kind of like the Grammies, but on a local level—is back. Sponsored by SN&R (Sacramento News & Review), the big night takes place at Ace of Spades on Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. On tap: A plethora of performances by SAMMIES nominees including R&B/soulster James Cavern, reggae/jam band Massive Delicious, the Element Brass Band (jazz) and tons more. In the spirit of democracy, SAMMIES winners are chosen by the voting public (though it’s too late to cast your vote; polls closed on March 11). Also in the spirit of democracy, SAMMIES covers every conceivable kind of music, from blues to rockabilly, metal to funk; they’ve even got awards for best teen artist, producer and deejay. Best of all, the SAMMIES provides an opportunity to honor and support local musicians, and to have fun doing it. Go!
