    Bill Portanova

Portanova & Associates specializes in representing people and businesses that have been brought into contact with the criminal justice system and other investigative and prosecutorial government agencies. Our clients include corporations, executives, professionals, physicians, public officials, state agencies, sports organizations, and others who suddenly face investigation or prosecution by state and federal agencies. The uniquely broad experience of founder Bill Portanova provides a legal edge few other law firms can offer. Before entering private practice, Portanova served for many years as a Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney in Sacramento, investigating and prosecuting complex cases centered on organized crime, narcotics networks, cyber-crime, and all manner of white collar crimes. Prior to that, Portanova served for ten years as a Deputy D.A. in Sacramento, prosecuting all types of crimes from DUIs to murders. His experience and accomplishments from both sides of the counsel table provide the team with an exceptional understanding of every case strengthened by his insights from all perspectives. Whether as witnesses, targets, victims or defendants, an ever-increasing number of people and business entities find themselves in official contact with various government agencies. Some agencies are more aggressive than others, and the consequences of investigation or prosecution can be devastating. Frequently, the government’s perception of its target is incorrect for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the government is wrong on the law, and sometimes the government is wrong on the facts. Our firm is equipped to conduct its own investigations on our clients’ behalf, whether to prepare a defense against an accusation, or to resolve workplace problems by conducting internal investigations to ferret out employee malfeasance. Sometimes the government simply lacks certain evidence that, once properly presented, terminates the investigation. Sometimes the government has the right case but the wrong person in its sights. And sometimes, there is no alternative to jury trial. Whatever the situation, our firm has been there before, on one side of the courtroom or the other, and we are always ready. Justice never sleeps.
