Sure, its nickname is “Whole Paycheck,” but who cares if some prices are a little bit higher at Whole Foods Market? This is one beautiful store, from the sparkling produce section (with scads of organic fruits and vegetables) to the full-service seafood and meat counters, where products (many of them sustainably harvested and humanely raised, without antibiotics and added hormones) are displayed behind glass like fine jewels. The prepared-foods section offers everything from pizza and panini to salads and hot entrées, making this a popular after-work destination for folks who don’t have time to put a home-cooked meal on the table. While it may appeal as much to foodies as to health freaks, selling an array of indulgent ingredients and tantalizing treats, Whole Foods boasts that it’s the world’s largest retailer of natural and organic foods, and it actively seeks out fresh, healthful, minimally processed products, as well as locally grown produce and products without artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners and hydrogenated fats.
