I was the delighted recipient of a wine gift this week – three distinctive bottles crafted at a winery called Mt. Beautiful in North Canterbury, New Zealand. A longtime fan of New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, I was pleased to try one from this new wine region in the Cheviot Hills. The elegant, fruit-forward 2011 Sauvignon Blanc was smooth and balanced, with gooseberry-peachy-flinty flavors and ripe stonefruit aromas with an herbaceous edge. The delicate, refined 2011 Pinot Noir was perfumey and subtly floral, suffusing the palate with gentle red currant, red cherry and fleeting rose flavors; and the winery’s lovely, lush Riesling was an exuberant mélange of lingering, honeyed ripe apricot and pear flavors with a peach-vanilla-honeysuckle aroma.
