Wine of the Week: Twisted Roots “1918” Old Vine Zinfandel

Lodi produces some spectacular old-vine Zinfandels, and I reveled in a fabulous one recently crafted by Twisted Roots Vineyard. The winery’s 2010 “1918” (made from grapes plucked from a vineyard planted in 1918) is everything you could hope for in an old-vine Zin: Spicy and intense, it offers up rich, jammy flavors of black plum, black cherry and blackberry, with invigorating notes of licorice, black pepper and vanilla. Full bodied and delicious, this wine can be served on its own or paired with robust foods such as pepperoni pizza, spicy grilled sausages, braised lamb shanks, marinated and grilled tri tip, and aged Parmesan and Dry Monterey Jack cheeses.
