Wine of the Week: Berryessa Gap 2009 Tradition

Who says you need to travel to Napa to find fabulous red wine? I recently tried a red blend crafted in Winters that, frankly, blew my socks off. Berryessa Gap’s 2009 Tradition (a blend of Zinfandel, Durif, Peloursin and Syrah) was one of the most distinctive, elegant and well-balanced red wines I have tasted in quite a while. Sumptuous ripe blackberry and black cherry flavors were partnered with a blast of peppery spiciness and luscious hints of black licorice, dark chocolate and toasty oak; while sturdy tannins and just the right amount of acidity contributed to the wine’s great structure. You can be proud to pull out a bottle of this locally-produced red blend at your next gathering or special event.
