Quan Nem Ninh Hoa on Stockton Boulevard is one of my favorite spots for fantastic, inexpensive Vietnamese fare. Usually I go there for the restaurant’s very entertaining make-it-yourself spring rolls, but recently I gobbled up one of the kitchen’s delicious banh xeo. Crispy on the outside and filled with pork and shrimp, this traditional crepe is made from rice flour and gets it’s color from turmeric powder. It looks a lot like an omelet, but it actually contains no eggs. The banh xeo comes with a gorgeous pile of fresh herbs and lettuce, which you wrap around chunks of the crepe and then dip in a sweet-sour nuoc cham, or fish sauce. You can find banh xeo on most Vietnamese restaurant menus, but this is one of the tastiest I’ve tried in the area.
