The butcher section of grocery stores always gets frustratingly crowded during the holiday season, with customers clamoring for the best-looking cuts of beef, plump poultry and pork roasts. If you’re tired of fighting the crowds, and like the idea of supporting small family farmers, consider shopping for your meat at a nearby farmers market. You may be surprised to discover that there’s a surprising array of sustainably and locally raised meat to be found at these wonderful events. And while you’re there, stock up on locally crafted cheeses, olive oil, nuts and a gorgeous array of fresh, seasonal produce. Some markets even offer wine from nearby wineries for tasting and sale. Farmers markets are a terrific place to share your holiday cheer (and shopping dollars).
