As a serious breakfast aficionado, I try to keep tabs on local restaurants that serve up exemplary morning fare. Eateries I patronize frequently include Cafe Bernardo, Fox & Goose and Roxy Restaurant and Bar. But if I have some time on my hands and a growling, rumbling tummy, I’ll happily make the trek to Putah Creek Cafe in Winters, which cranks out some of the finest breakfasts in the entire region. I love the cozy booths, friendly staff and earnest, generously-portioned breakfasts – from the comforting biscuits and gravy and Meat Lovers omelet (crammed full of applewood-smoked bacon, country sausage and linguica) to the sweetly pleasing Texas French toast (ask for an addition of fresh seasonal berries and vanilla whipped cream), the selection is undeniably appealing and hearty. But the Cafe also offers an array of delectable, fresh-baked pastries, like peanut butter cookies, chocolate cupcakes and marionberry pies – and many regular customers take these yummy items home to savor later in the day.
