Sometimes, only a burger will satisfy – and this week my entire family happened to be hit with burger lust all at the same time. We happily indulged at midtown’s Burgers and Brew, one of several great eateries (including Magpie Café and Shady Lady Saloon) that inhabit the same lively block. As popular for its exciting lineup of draft beer as it is for its juicy burgers, the restaurant offers an enticing array of menu items and a boisterous, pub-like environment.
Purists (like me) can stick with the plain hamburger – a flavorful rib-sticker that features a 1/2 lb. Niman Ranch beef patty laid atop a tender sesame bun (with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles) but more adventurous diners relish the chili cheeseburger, loaded with chili con carne, cheddar cheese and onions (note: don’t plan to kiss – or breathe on – anyone after you eat it) and the exotic lamb burger, embellished with roasted garlic, olive oil and topped with feta cheese – served up with a side of fresh mint yogurt sauce. And the burgers are even tastier when paired with a cold, frothy Anchor Steam or Belgian Hoegaarden White Ale.
