I’m a sucker for a good kebab, and seek out this meaty Middle Eastern dish on a regular basis. But while I love chicken kebabs, they often arrive dry – which requires a generous slathering of tzatziki or hummus to add much-needed moisture. But last week I discovered a chicken kebab so moist and juicy it needed no embellishment – at downtown’s friendly Kamdesh Kabab House. Served up with a tasty pile of brown rice and a warm roasted tomato, these succulent lumps of skewered poultry were smokily, fragrantly appealing. Equally scrumptious was the kitchen’s bold, lusty sabzi challow, a traditional Afghani New Year’s Eve dish featuring a fork-tender lamb shank smothered in a thick, delectable spinach and cilantro sauce. If you’re feeling adventurous, request a seat on the restaurant’s elevated dining area – it offers low tables where guests sit on the floor, surrounded by cushy pillows.
