Many of us know about the huge farmers market that occurs each Sunday in Sacramento under the freeway at 8th and W streets. But that’s not the only outdoor source of fresh produce and artisan food products available to foodies on the weekend – if you’re seeking a smaller, more neighborhoody atmosphere, check out the midtown farmers market, which is held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 20th and J streets. In addition to a great selection of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables, I found cheese, honey, locally raised meats, a plethora of baked goods and even an organic dog food vendor. Coffee is available, picnic tables are set up for shoppers who want to cool their heels and listen to the live music, and there’s even a Belgian waffle food truck (actually, an old Volkswagen bus) cooking up crusty, sweet treats for hungry visitors.
