Farm-to-Fork Cuisine Shines at Carpe Vino


Cozy little Carpe Vino in Auburn is one of the region’s best kept dining treasures. Chef Eric Alexander, an enthusiastic supporter of small family farms, always incorporates a wide range of locally grown produce and meats into his ever-changing menu. A recent visit proved once again to me that it’s well worth your time to make the trek to Placer County for a meal at this distinctive, intimate restaurant located in Auburn’s charming historic downtown. Highlights of the meal included Alexander’s knockout puree of sunshine yellow, sweet corn soup, which tasted like summer in a bowl; and the vivacious fried green tomatoes, served atop impossibly juicy, colorful fresh heirloom tomato slices, were topped with a tangle of arugula, blue cheese bits and crispy bacon chunks, then drizzled with a tangy buttermilk dressing. For dessert, the kitchen’s profiteroles, flanked by a small scoop of late-harvest Viognier ice cream, showcased slices of a sun-ripened, fragrant local peach.
