Channel Your Inner Farmer: Upcoming Sacramento Co-op Classes

Spending too much time at the office, or doing housework? It’s time to get back to the earth—and the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op can lead the way. The store is featuring two upcoming classes sure to appeal to your inner farmer:

Composting 101

Offered on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, this hands-on workshop is designed for “anyone who has access to even a small piece of yard, food scraps and/or green waste”—which would be most of us. Attendees learn what is (and is not) compostable, and how to do it “lazy- or speedy-style.” Each participant needs to bring a sample of their yard waste for evaluation. The class costs $10 per person ($5 for Co-op owners).

Raising Chickens in Your Backyard

Yes, you can have those cute, clucking critters in your backyard—and on the evening of Wednesday, April 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the friendly folks at Soil Born Farms will teach you “all you need to know in order to choose the right breeds, provide proper housing and make sure your chickens are healthy and producing the best eggs you’ve ever tasted.” The class will be held at Soil Born Farms American River Ranch (2140 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova), but attendees register through the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op. The class costs $35 per person ($30 for Co-op owners).
