An Enticing Quaff: Gekkeikan’s Black & Gold Sake

I recently had the delicious pleasure of sipping a chilled glass of Gekkeikan’s Black & Gold Sake. Packaged in a stunning, unusually shaped black bottle, the smooth, perfumey sake (a blend of two sakes—one crafted with rice milled to 60 percent, and one to 70 percent) offered enticing, delicate flavors of ripe cantaloupe, lychee and toasted almonds.

Did you know that Gekkeikan Sake, located in Folsom, invites guests to visit its Japanese garden, brewery and tasting room? The tasting room offers complimentary tastings of plum wine and an array of the company’s locally made sakes. The tasting room is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Self-guided tours of the brewery are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but if you are interested in a guided brewery tour, reservations are available through Gekkeikan’s website
