Yes, it’s true: food writers have the Best. Job. Ever.
I reveled in a number of interesting, tasty dishes last week, but three (well, four) were real standouts. The first was Kathmandu Kitchen’s fabulous lamb saagwala: moist, tender chunks of lamb enveloped in a luscious spinach sauce embellished with garlic and roasted cumin. This comforting dish satisfies on all levels, and half the fun of eating it is slathering the sauce on Kathmandu’s cushy-soft, fresh-made naan bread.
A colorful antipasto appetizer at OneSpeed was another dazzler: thinly-sliced cured meats neatly lined the plate, topped with an exciting assemblage of olives and marinated baby artichoke hearts; fresh mozzarella crostini festooned with roasted red bell peppers, and the showstopper – bright pink, sliced hard boiled eggs, whose lovely color was derived from a gentle marinade in beet juice.
Sweet treats from Roseville’s Cupcake A La Mode beautifully rounded out a week of gluttony: I wouldn’t consider myself much of a cupcake fan, but I’ll make an enthusiastic exception for owner/pastry chef Lisa Clark’s high-quality, inspired treats. My favorites were the knockout “After Dinner Mint” cupcake – chocolate cake crowned with chocolate-speckled, palate-reviving white chocolate peppermint buttercream and a chocolate peppermint cookie; and the sophisticated, irresistible “Bella Nutella,” whose chocolate cake was topped with a creamy hit of Nutella under a pouf of chocolate hazelnut buttercream, garnished with a chocolate-covered hazelnut truffle and a chocolate hazelnut cookie. Mmmmmm.
