5 Great Places for a Sandwich

Sometimes, nothing will satisfy quite like a hefty, freshly-made sandwich. Visit these five spots for some excellent choices:

Juno’s Kitchen & Delicatessen

If you’re into creative fare, check out the sandwich lineup at Juno’s in East Sac. This cute little shop (named after the owners’ dog) offers vibrant items like the Spanish-inspired membrillo (quince paste) and jamon (ham) sandwich, embellished with manchego cheese, snappy arugula leaves and olive oil; and the popular and delicious banh mi, constructed with grilled pork loin, jalapeno peppers, pickled radish and fresh herbs. Vegetarians will love the panko-crusted eggplant sandwich.

Corti Brothers

Savvy lunchers know that the Corti Brothers deli whips up some of the most decadent and fabulous sandwiches in town. Girthy, loaded with fresh goodies and always served with a warm smile, the store’s enticing selections include the “Tuscany” (Italian-style fennel salami on an olive oil-brushed sourdough roll, piled high with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, fresh pesto, and Gruyère cheese) and the super-yummy “Gina M,” stuffed with meatballs and a zesty marinara sauce.

Dad’s Sandwiches & Deli

This quirky and beloved downtown sandwich institution prepares some fantastic, high-quality menu items – try the vegetarian-friendly “Besto Pesto” sandwich: sourdough bread slathered with pesto and loaded with walnuts, cheddar cheese and a raft of veggies; and the bold and robust “Bad Breath Special” whose, er, lingering fragrance can be credited to the blue cheese, red onions, garlic spread and horseradish sauce accompanying the sandwich’s roast beef.

Magpie Café

Lauded for its use of radiantly fresh ingredients and interesting, seasonal menu items, Magpie Café always has an appealing array of sandwiches available at lunchtime. Keep your fingers crossed that the “BLT #2” will be one of the day’s offerings when you visit – you’ll savor the combination of fried green tomatoes, rich pork belly confit and brightly-flavored bunches of watercress, arranged atop toothsome Acme rye bread.

Jack’s Urban Eats

Perhaps best known for its enormous salads, Jack’s Urban Eats also cranks out some tasty sandwiches. Try the feisty BBQ chicken sandwich, loaded with “chargrilled” chicken breast smothered in chipotle-mango barbeque sauce and enlivened with crusty-sweet fried onion strings; or the “Jack’s Classic” tri-tip sandwich, composed on a sourdough roll with caramelized onions and honey mustard.
