City of Trees Scottish Highland Dancing Competition

November 5 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

$5.00

Celtic traditions continue on in Sacramento with a Scottish Highland Dancing competition held on November 5th at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Scot Dance Sacramento, a collective of Sacramento-area teachers of Scottish Highland dancing, is hosting its’ annual competition, showcasing dancers from Northern California and beyond. The event will take place on November 5, 2022 from 10:00am – 12:30pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Sacramento. The dancing will be accompanied by live bagpipe music provided by Abraham McCarty, pipe major of the City of Sacramento Pipe Band.

This event highlights the tradition of the Celtic arts in the Sacramento area. The first recorded local Scottish Games, which featured Highland dancing, took place in 1885, as reported by the Sacramento Bee (then the Weekly Bee). One of the organizers of this event, Jessica Bach of the Tartan Hearts School of Highland Dance, follows in the footsteps of her grandfather, Clair “Brownie” Brown. Brown owned and operated Brownie’s Lounge, an Irish pub-style bar and restaurant, for over 50 years. Another of the organizers, Kyla Groeschel of Kyla’s School of Scottish Highland Dance, has been involved in organizing Scottish Highland dance competitions in Sacramento for over 35 years.
