Preston Castle

This old haunt, once a reform school, opens weekends in October for your scariest night out.

Preston Castle was built in Ione between 1890 and 1894 to house the Preston School of Industry, a reform school for boys, which remained open until 1960. For the next 40 years, the building remained vacant, and it fell into disrepair. In 2014, the Preston Castle Foundation, whose mission is to rehabilitate the site, became owner of the property after having leased it for several years. The castle is thought by some to be haunted! It has been featured on television’s “Ghost Hunters” and other shows, and served as a location for thriller movies.

The 2021 Preston Castle Haunt, a scare-filled nighttime walk through the castle, takes place on weekends from Oct. 15 through Halloween. For more information, go to
