When the announcement finally came in late October, Sacramento soccer fans were ready. They packed The Bank food hall to hear Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber break the news that Sacramento had been awarded the 29th MLS expansion team in the nation. Investors and officals on hand included Kevin Nagle, Matt Alvarez, Ron Burkle, Garber, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Gov. Gavin Newsom. Sacramento Republic Football Club will begin play in MLS in spring 2022 in a new $252 million, 20,000+-seat soccer stadium that will be developed in the downtown Railyards.
