Water rushes over the North Fork Dam at Lake Clementine, in the Auburn State Recreation Area. The falls are accessible on foot via the Lake Clementine Trail that starts on Old Foresthill Road and follows the North Fork of the American River. It’s about a 4.5-mile out and-back trip, and as you cross beneath the Foresthill Bridge (the tallest bridge in California), you’ll really feel the expanse of the canyon. Watch your footing out here and don’t climb any closer than is safe—mist from the falls makes for some slippery rocks.
