Wine of the Week: Ursa Vineyards 2007 Major Red

Last week I had a firecracker of a red wine called “Major Red,” crafted by Ursa Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills. This bright, impactful wine – a blend of Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah – had plummy undertones and snappy blackberry and cherry flavors, enlivened with notes of black pepper, cedar and leather. Taut and lively, this wine would do well with roasted red meats, spicy pizza, boldly-flavored pastas and stronger cheeses such as Gruyère, Gorgonzola and Parmesan.
