The beginning of a New Year is the symbolic clean slate many look forward to when January begins.

This could be the year you can go back to school, learn how to cook, finally learn to scuba dive, meet that special someone or get the long deserved promotion at work; the possibilities are fruitful and the expectations limitless.

But before you get started, maybe you should listen to your mother and “clean your room” and while you are at, why not tackle the living room too.
That is advice from Mary Mieth—a Sacramento Feng Shui specialist—who spends most of her days poking through bedroom closets, bathroom cabinets and home offices helping people unclutter their lives to reach their highest potential.

“Clutter is stuck energy,” says Mieth, who teaches Feng Shui classes at East West Bookstore in Sacramento. “The more clutter you have. The more stuck you are in life, prosperity, relationships and health.”

When deciding to unclutter, feeling overwhelmed is a very common emotion. Where does one start? Mieth encourages taking stock on where piles of chaos are congregating in your life. If bills are stacking up on the kitchen table, create a bill pay station. Is there a treadmill in your bedroom? Move it out, it’s not good for the romance in your relationship. And your handbag is a microcosm of clutter madness and you can never find your car keys, it’s time to invest in a bag with multi-compartments.

“Think of the purse as the mini version of trying to find something in your life and you can’t, says Mieth. “There you are, living in a stuck, chaotic energy.”

Mieth reveals a few causes for clutter, tips for clutter busting and the importance of letting it all go this year:

Causes for clutter

  • Technical errors: Inconvenient storage, object has no home.
  • External realities: Unrealistic workload, in transition.
  • Emotional: Sentimental attachment, need for abundance, what clutter does for you.

Clutter busting tips
  • Analyze: What is the cause of your clutter, what is working, what isn’t working, why do you want to get organized? Find your reasons and write it down.
  • Strategize: Store things as close to their point of use as possible.  Estimate time for each room, shelves, closets, work on visible clutter first, avoid zig-zag organizing.
  • S.P.A.C.E: Sort, purge, assign a home, containerize, evaluate

Places to dispose of your clutter
  • Goodwill
  • Consignment stores
  • Garage sales
  • Friends
  • Used book stores

Holding onto memories
  • Treasure chests: Create a sampler box with letters, cards, and mementos. But don’t put them all in the box.
  • Photo album: Take pictures of larger items that are cluttering your life, but have sentimental attachment, and get rid of it.
