Saturday in Tomales Bay

My family and I took a day trip to Tomales Bay a couple weeks ago—90 minutes from Sac to the town of Point Reyes Station if you go west through Novato off 101. The farmers market goes on every Saturday morning outside Toby's Feed Barn (www.tobysfeedbarn.com) through Nov. 7—it's a bustling, tightly packed lot full of Marin Organic (www.marinorganic.org) fruits and veggies, butter, eggs, cheese, grassfed meats, oysters, lotions, homespun yarn, kittens. We bought some strawberries and a half-wheel of Cowgirl Creamery (www.cowgirlcreamery.com) cheese (ca-ching—8 bucks!) to take with us to the beach. My two girls (13 and 10) swam out to the floating dock offshore at Heart's Desire Beach on the west side of Tomales Bay. (www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=470). Later, we left my husband dozing and took the half-mile hike through the woods to Indian Beach. This little hike goes steep uphill, then steep downhill, past signs identifying trees and citing Native American lore, and dumps you onto this deserted beach that's got more Native American stuff--including a teepee—and where the sand is covered with seashells. The girls gathered shells to make earrings and necklaces, while I lay back in the sand with my toes in the water and imagined life before cars, cell phones, plastic and deadlines. It was a great day away from the computer.
