This Weekend: Eat with the Animals, Pan for Gold and Enjoy a Two-Man Circus

Here's a handful of activities to keep you busy and well-fed this weekend:

Savor Fine Food and Wine (While Surrounded by Wild Beasts)
The Sacramento Zoo is hosting a unique food and wine event on Saturday called the King of Feasts. An impressive lineup of local restaurants (including Chops Steaks Seafood and Bar, Mulvaney's Building & Loan, Dad's Kitchen and Sandra Dee's Barbecue & Seafood) will be on hand to provide the feast, and a selection of local wineries and breweries will be pouring the evening’s libations. Live entertainment will be provided by the Rhythm Vandals, a "soulful blues rock band,” and attendees are invited to stroll through the zoo during the evening and mingle with its exotic residents
When: Saturday, June 27th
Time: 5:30 to 8:30 pm
Tickets in advance: $50 General, $45 Sacramento Zoo member. Day of event: $60

Placer & Nevada County Residents: Consider Eating (Very) Local Meat
Tired of making weekend grocery store meat runs? If you live in Placer or Nevada County, you have a better (and much more sustainable) option. Did you know that UC Cooperative Extension hosts a meat buying club in these two counties? The goal of the club is “to provide delicious, locally grown meats to the residents of Placer and Nevada Counties” and to support local farms and ranches. Participating operations are all family-owned; the livestock are raised on Sierra Foothills range and pasture, and are produced with no hormones or antibiotics. Certified “pasture-raised” organic eggs are also available. Members order from a list of frozen individual cuts of beef, lamb, and pork on a monthly basis. There is no membership fee and no minimum orders are imposed. The informative website has a fun “meet your producers” section (“We let our hens run around in the pasture all day long throughout the year. They forage for insects and grasses while automatically fertilizing the soil” - Tim Cheney, CC Family Farm) as well as recipes and a guide to meat cuts.

Celebrate Sacramento's Rich History
The Sacramento History Museum and the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation have a fun weekend planned for folks interested in learning more about our city’s colorful past. Activities and exhibits include “California's Gold Rush Legacy” walking tours, Western-style shootouts at Waterfront Park, Gold Rush-style bowling (really!), gold panning and story telling. All this fun will make you hungry, so be sure to check out one of Old Sacramento’s fine restaurants. Recommendations include the elegant and historic Firehouse Restaurant (www.firehouseoldsac.com) and Rio City Café (www.riocitycafe.com). Scheduled activities will take place throughout the Old Sacramento Historic District every weekend this summer.

Play (and Gain a Few Pounds) at the Placer County Fair
If you thought fairs were all about farm animals, pie-eating contests and Ferris wheels, The 2009 Placer County Fair has a few surprises in store for you. This innovative fair (which opened yesterday), is celebrating “100 Years of Rails & Roses,” and features mixed martial arts cage fights, a “live shark encounter,” a husband-and–wife magician and juggling team, and a two-man circus. Kids will enjoy the “mad scientist” slime stations and the rides (yep, there’s a carnival, too), and there’s even live music and a classic car exhibit. Bring the family, eat some greasy fair food and enjoy the fun.

When: Now through Sunday, June 28th
