editorial profile:
Sometimes it’s difficult to explain why, exactly, a certain restaurant remains popular over a long period of time. Often there is an ineffable chemistry at work; the right food, the right service, the right customers, the right location, that all seem to come together at the right time to create a restaurant compelling enough to lure patrons back again and again. Zinfandel Grille, along with its customers, seems to have concocted that chemistry. There is an almost clubbish feeling you get when you visit this restaurant, a sense that you’ve walked into a party that started a long time before you arrived. And while the dining areas are attractive and comfortable, with comfy booth seats, pretty artwork and sweeping views of Fair Oaks Boulevard, it’s clear the heart and soul of the restaurant lies in the bar, which is usually thronged with happy regulars who all seem to know each other. If you’ve come for dinner and want some privacy, request the dining room closest to the front door—it provides a hushed, detached environment more conducive to quiet conversation. The main dining room is simply a spillover for the bar’s chatty conviviality, and offers a livelier and noisier dining experience. Pizzas are very popular at Zinfandel Grille, and you can see them going in and out of the wood-fired oven from your table. Pizzas range from the simple “margherite”—topped with tomato-basil sauce, fresh basil leaves and fresh mozzarella—to the very delectable goat cheese calzone, stuffed with prosciutto, artichoke hearts and caramelized onions. Appetizers are eclectic and fun: Try the carnitas quesadilla or the refreshing crab and mango rolls—perfect for a hot summer evening—served with lime-ponzu sauce. The kitchen also serves up some great pasta dishes, including the rich, indulgent chicken fettuccine, sprinkled with toasted bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese, and there’s a nice selection of meat dishes (don’t miss the blue cheese-stuffed meatloaf) for committed carnivores. While not particularly kid-friendly, the restaurant does offer a cute little menu for its pint-sized guests, and early-birders are rewarded with a 20 percent discount on their dinners if they order between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. There’s a reason why this restaurant is still going strong after more than 10 years. Maybe you should visit and find out why. — Kira O'Donnell

" Zin Grille is an ideal place to relax and enjoy an easy dinner when the day has kicked you pretty hard. Climb up on a bar stool, say hello to whomever is nearby (you can run into some interesting Sacramentans), and have at the drink or wine list and menu. Not to be missed is the Mushroom salad, with just the right mixture of fresh 'shrooms, cheese and light lemon juice. Follow it with a calzone or the chicken quesadilla. Pair these foods with the zinfandel trio they offer (we had 3 small-but amples pours of Michael David's 7 Deadly, Earthquake and Incognito) and your day ends on a good note. "
