editorial profile:

If you want to experience a typical (and boisterous) college dining experience, head over to friendly Uncle Vito’s in Davis. This neighborhood pizza cafe is a fave of the UC Davis student crowd, and it dishes up seriously delicious thin-crust pizzas. Most popular are the pizza slices, which are shockingly huge and at $3.75 to $4.25, are also pretty easy on the pocketbook. When we visited, the lunch line started forming at 11:20 a.m., and you could see a distinctive pizza yearning etched on the waiting customers’ eager faces. The flavors available by the slice are predictable—cheese, pepperoni (which is wonderful), “combo” and tomato pesto, but if you want to order a whole pizza, things get very interesting. Non-meat eaters will swoon over the “Greenwich Veg,” piled with a tasty list of ingredients which include spinach, roasted garlic, almonds (yes, almonds), caramelized onions and Provolone cheese; and carnivores need to try the “FDNY Smokin’ Hot,” topped with pepperoni, Canadian bacon, Andouille sausage and chipotle sauce. There’s even a Gorgonzola and caramelized Fuji apple pizza. However, if you’re not in the mood for pizza, try one of the kitchen’s salads (I recommend the refreshing “Pronto Chop,” with salami slices, soft feta cheese, garbanzo beans and Kalamata olives) or a hot sandwich, such as the briskly-selling Italian cheese steak. And if calories aren’t an issue, dive into a plate of Uncle Vito’s famous Buffalo Fries—French fries drizzled with blue cheese dressing and spicy Buffalo sauce. The cafe is located on a busy corner downtown, and on nice days the front “door” is rolled up to connect the inside with the bustling world outside. A scuffed, handsome wood bar to the right is lined with sparkly, plastic bar stools and bouncy, booth-like seating is available in the center of the long, narrow space. Arrive early if you want to eat quickly—otherwise, be prepared to wait in line. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: This is a great place to “invent” your own pizza. You can order a custom 20-inch pizza and choose your own toppings, which range from whole milk mozzarella and crimini mushrooms to pineapple and prosciutto.
