editorial profile:

The kids are clamoring for burgers and fries, but you’re concerned about their health. UFood Grill in Roseville knows parents regularly face this dilemma, and they’ve designed a menu that aims to please every member of the family. UFood, a bustling branch of an ever-growing chain, offers patrons “the next generation of fast food” in menu items that are all baked, grilled or steamed instead of deep-fried. Vegetarian options abound, as do whole grain brown rice, breads and tortillas, fresh fruit and free-range meats. The cheery, warehouse-sized restaurant, with its efficient counter and friendly staff, whizzes your food out fast enough to make your head spin. And while your kids may feel that the selections at UFood can’t quite match the greasy, insidiously appealing tastiness of traditional chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers, they can still enjoy their favorite dishes, but with a few twists. The grilled cheese sandwich comes on wheat berry bread, the chicken fingers are oven-baked. Burgers are made with 100 percent USDA choice beef, and accompanying bacon is made from turkey, not pork. Parents will like the restaurant’s “UBowls,” brown rice-based entrees embellished with your choice of topping. (“Tofusion,”—organic tofu, vegetables and ginger-soy glaze is one, a “chopstick chicken” with broccoli, carrots and teriyaki Thai chili sauce is another.) There’s also an interesting selection of wraps, ranging from the chicken meatball marinara to a “Portable portabella” with feta and Parmesan cheeses, organic greens and tomatoes. Grilled entrees include the turkey medallions with cranberry glaze, and there’s even a free-range bison steak patty. And the fries? Playfully called “unFries,” UFood’s version is trans-fat free and oven-baked, so no need to feel guilty about eating a handful. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Don’t miss UFood’s creamy, cinnamony sweet potato mash, one of the best items on the menu.
