editorial profile:

Many Sacramento food lovers are familiar with cheery, popular Tres Hermanas restaurant on J Street. However, perhaps less known is the family’s second restaurant, Three Sisters, located on Folsom Boulevard in East Sacramento. The restaurants are very different—the J Street establishment is cramped, cozy and bright, while the Folsom Boulevard location is larger, has a full bar with seating, and is very dimly lit. Walls are mottled yellow-orange, floors are well-worn and pitted, and the only natural light in the restaurant streams valiantly through small, arched windows encircled with cute red chili fairy lights at the front of the restaurant. The restaurant does offer a nice outdoor patio dining area, a terrific spot on warm days. Three Sisters does a rollicking lunch business, filling up quickly and often hosting large groups of enthusiastic diners who devour the restaurant’s zesty, vibrant salsa and warm, non-greasy chips. Entrées arrive on fun, tropical plates and are accompanied by your choice of beans (we recommend the soupy, tender black beans) and plain white rice. Don’t miss the kitchen’s bold and spicy chile verde or the robust chicken or beef fajitas. Yummy dinner items include the complex, aromatic chicken mole poblano, sprinkled with sesame seeds and lime-marinated onions; and the thigh-thickening chiles rellenos, fresh chilaca peppers stuffed with cheese, battered and deep-fried. Olé! — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Three Sisters has a wonderful Saturday and Sunday brunch menu. Try the machaca, dried shredded beef scrambled with eggs, onions, tomatoes and fresh jalapeño peppers.
