editorial profile:
Found in Fair Oaks Village, surrounded by antique shops and a hair salon, Village Bistro is a quaint breakfast and lunch spot modest in décor, but extravagant with its menu. Village Bistro is a hotspot for locals and weekend bicyclists who come for its hearty biscuits and gravy served with Italian sausage, or its sweet and fluffy blueberry pancakes and flavorful frittatas (such as the crimini and spinach sprinkled with herb and feta cheese). Lunchtime brings a smorgasbord of salads, braised pork sandwiches or half-pound burgers layered in cheddar cheese, bacon and fresh made aioli. Entrées for lunch range from made-to-order pastas from spicy jambayla or a linguini with tiger prawns in a white wine sauce. But don’t overlook meatloaf and mashed potatoes or the Caribbean jerk chicken sautéed and served over grilled polenta and topped with pineapple and cilantro. Cindy Arora

" I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy and their kids too. Although the Village Bistro was charming, it completely lacked in service appeal. As we (me and my two school age boys) waited a very long time to be seated, the wait staff completely ignored us. There was no sign to seat yourself or wait to be seated. It was not like they were really busy; there were three tables of customers. We finally found a dirty table and sat ourselves down. All other tables had seating for two. After another long wait we finally were recognized. My guess is that they realized we were not going away. When we finally got a menu, the waiter promptly asked for our order. Which brings me to the menu, not at all kid friendly; the only item safe for kids was the side order of pancakes. Very quickly we see our order on the counter, where it remained as the wait staff moved two tables together and sat a party of six grown-ups. I can not tell you how nasty the food was. Although cook through, the pancakes were very pale. The eggs had no flavor, not even salt. The potatoes appeared to have been leftovers from yesterday reheated several times over. If you find yourself hungry in Old Fair Oaks do not stop by, it is not worth the wait. "

" I tried to take my wife here for a romantic dinner one night but it all went downhill as soon as we walked in the door. We could hear the insane chef screaming and throwing things in the kitchen all the way from the entrance. After waiting far too long for the capacity and amount of customers in the building, our server seemed on the verge of tears obviously from the so called chef's anger issues. When we recieved our food everything seemed bland and greasy like it was re-heated in a hot bowl of old grease. Although I wanted to leave as quick as I could my wife insisted that we stay for dessert. We were very dissapointed by not only the presentation, obviously taken from a box and aimlessly thrown on the plate, but the flavor and texture was that of a convalescent hospitals pudding. Despite my bad experience I went again for breakfast with a few friends that insisted on going. Since we were the only table in there, the omelettes came out alright. If you're looking for a nice french place to eat, even though there is a four star french chef, this is deffinately not the place. "

" The Village Bistro is definitely the place to go if you like great food at reasonable prices. Fair Oaks really needs this friendly neighborhood restaurant - the chef and staff work hard to please every person that walks in. They do have a lot of repeat customers so they must be doing something right! And the cuisine can rival that of well established houses in the area. "
