editorial profile:

If you wake up hungry on a lazy weekend morning, there’s no better place to head than The Lucky Cafe. Shabby, comfortable and pretty much always crowded, this midtown institution serves up some of the heartiest—and most interesting—breakfasts in town. The restaurant has two dining rooms—the main room offers fraying, bouncy booth seats along one wall and swirly counter stools along the other. If you arrive late, however, as most of us do, you’ll end up in the no-man’s-land of the second dining room, filled with wobbly plastic tables and a dearth of ambience. Don’t worry, however, the food’s great in both rooms, and as soon as that plate of crusty, do-your-soul-good corned beef hash or biscuits and gravy appear you won’t care where you are. The Lucky Cafe’s claim to fame is that it offers more than 50 types of omelettes, and, boy, are there some unusual ones. If you’re feeling bold, try a pork loin (with applesauce) omelette, or the crab meat, scallop and shrimp omelette with “creamy white sauce.” Fortunately for us traditionalists, the restaurant offers a great lineup of more conventional omelette fillings, including a fun selection of sausages. There’s also a number of egg-and-meat combos and griddled items, in addition to “specialty breakfasts” such as the chicken-fried steak and a vegetable potato platter for our vegetarian friends. And while known primarily for its breakfasts, the Café also offers lunch Monday through Friday, and items include the “deluxe” burger (on a garlic roll), chef’s salad and a comforting egg salad sandwich. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Try the chicken-turkey Burmese curry sausage
