editorial profile:
I’ll just say, right up front, that The Limelight is a bar. Not just any ordinary bar, mind you—a very popular neighborhood bar. However, it’s more than that: I like to think of The Limelight as a Bar With Benefits—the benefits, of course, being its really good, rib-sticking food. This is a place you can feel comfortable bringing the whole family, especially for its famous weekend brunch. Even though it smells like a bar (what bar doesn’t?), the patrons and servers are friendly, the place is clean and comfortable, and families can settle in at one of the attractive oak tables in the dining area instead of bellying up to the nice wooden bar. While waiting for your food, you can watch the multiple televisions (showing sports events—hope you like ’em) and check out the card room (parents only) in the next room. The kids will love The Limelight’s chocolate chip Belgian waffle and fluffy buttermilk pancakes, available on Saturday and Sunday mornings only. Brunch items that will appeal to mom and pop include the hefty “chorizo breakfast” (a flour tortilla stuffed with spicy chunks of chorizo, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, eggs and cheese); and the keep-you-going-till-supper Filet Mignon Eggs Benedict, served up on a toasted English muffin and laden with Hollandaise sauce. If you happen to visit for lunch or dinner, you’ll find a great selection of appetizers (try the thigh-thickening baked potato skins, with melted cheddar cheese, bacon, chives and, of course, sour cream) and the spicy chicken quesadilla. Dinner items that would go well with that, er, adult beverage range from the “Speedy Burger” (a half-pound beef patty on a sesame bun with pickles, chipotle dressing and fries) to more upscale menu items such as a center cut charbroiled pork chop and an Asian stir fry with noodles. You may not consider yourself the going-to-bars type, but the Limelight may just change your mind. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip:
Sandwich lovers will be delighted to discover The Limelight’s hot pastrami & Swiss and the grilled portabella sandwich, smeared with basil aioli and stacked high with roasted red bell peppers, tomatoes and Jack cheese on sourdough bread.
