editorial profile:

When I’m yearning for a vacation but can’t get away, I like to visit charming little Kabob House on Fulton Avenue. This very friendly, family-owned establishment has an attractive mural on one wall depicting a pristine Greek island surrounded by a serene blue ocean, and if I stare at it long enough I can almost believe I’m far from Sacramento. The restaurant is also decorated with whimsical, freestanding white Grecian columns, festooned with gauzy drapes and grapevines, that add a schlocky charm to the ambience. Décor aside, however, this restaurant puts out some really good food, from the feather-light spanikopita triangles, filled with a robust spinach-feta mixture, to the meaty ground lamb kabob, delicious when wrapped in the kitchen’s warm and puffy pita bread with a slathering of yogurt-based tzatziki sauce. If you like to nibble lots of different items, try the “meza” plate, piled high with hummus dip, spanikopita, warm, grape leaf-encased dolomathes (you’ll love their lemony tang) and babaganough, a creamy, sumptuous dip made from roasted eggplant. Main courses include the very popular garlic chicken—available as a meal served with Greek salad and rice, or stuffed inside pita bread as a lunchtime sandwich; shrimp shish kabob, and pastitso, a Greek casserole prepared from noodles and seasoned ground sirloin, topped with cream sauce. It may not offer much of a view (unless you like gritty parking lots), but Kabob House definitely knows how to please your palate. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Vegetarians will enjoy the restaurant’s vegetable kabobs, served with a bountiful Greek salad, rice and warm pita bread
