Let’s face it—there are times when nothing will satisfy but a hot, juicy hamburger. And while there are many options available to us in the Sacramento region, the standard fast-food route can be less than appealing. A delightful (and, yes, still fast) option is The Habit, a cute, tidy establishment off busy Howe Avenue. In addition to the very popular “Habitburgers,” the kitchen also cranks out a yummy selection of sandwiches (definitely try the Chicken Club, on toasted, buttered sourdough with bacon and creamy avocado slices) and salads. And let me just note that these are real salads, not the “salads” of dubious nutritional value (and flavor) you’re likely to find at one of the national fast-food chains. Ranging from the Santa Barbara Cobb (The Habit originated in Santa Barbara in 1969), showered with chopped tomato, avocado, Gorgonzola cheese, bacon and chunks of egg; to the hefty grilled chicken Caesar. But if you’re there for a burger, you’ll be pleased by the simple but appealing selection—interesting items include the teriyaki charburger, with grilled pineapple; and the BBQ bacon charburger. The fries (cooked in 100 percent trans fat free oil) are nice and hot, and if you’re throwing caution to the winds, The Habit also offers milkshakes, malts, ice cream cones and sundaes. The interior, with its cute, twisty faux palm trees, cheery yellow walls and stripy-upholstered booths, will make you smile. — Kira O'Donnell
