editorial profile:

Since its opening in 1960, the Firehouse Restaurant has reigned for its elusive romantic atmosphere and historical charms. The building—an actual firehouse built in 1853—is situated in Old Sacramento where rickety wood sidewalks and horse drawn carriages are part of the experience. The Firehouse is white tablecloth all the way, with crystal wine glasses, chandeliers and a staircase that calls for sweeping movie-star entrances. The outdoor courtyard is enviable with plenty of canopied trees to create a natural shade during the day. At night, the trees become props in the art of romance covered in white glowing lights. New chef Deneb Williams, has transformed the meat-and-potato restaurant into one laced with California cuisine. Try its award-winning Caesar salad with salmon, a chilled bowl of champagne-melon gazpacho or tasty fish tacos made with Kona Kampachi. Take a seat in the sophisticated main dining room and order farm-raised pork T-bone and frutti de mare served with risotto. Save room for the dessert menu that tempts with revamped classics such as baked Alaska made with white peach gelato and a soufflé with Grand Marnier crème and raspberry sauces. Cindy Arora

Insider tip: The wine list here is impressive. If you need a recommendation talk to your server and they are very gracious.
