editorial profile:

Small, family-owned Thai Palace is comfortingly consistent. It’s nice to know that the delicious, zingy ginger pork you enjoyed last month will taste exactly the same when you order it again tomorrow. The staff’s friendliness—and the rapidity with which you receive your food—is also wonderfully consistent, making this restaurant a very desirable eating destination in East Sacramento. The interior of Thai Palace is pleasantly decorated, with maroon tablecloths, pretty and intricately carved wooden screens, and a mirrored back wall that makes the restaurant appear much larger than it actually is. Lace-draped windows face J Street, and a table in the center of the dining room displays sparkly, colorful Thai clothing that patrons have the opportunity to purchase. Menu items are brightly flavored and vibrant, and include such Thai favorites as roasted duck curry and phrik khing (your choice of meat sautéed with green beans and chili paste), numerous curries and a great choice of noodle dishes. (Try the pan-fried prawns with silver noodles.) The kitchen’s traditional and spicy som tam salad, prepared from shredded green papaya, is a refreshing choice on a sweltering day, and vegetarians will revel in the #66 “eggplant vegetarian”—silky chunks of eggplant sautéed with tofu, hot chilis and basil. If you bring the kids, order them the moist, yummy chicken satay skewers—dipped in a mild, thick peanut sauce, they’re sure to please even the pickiest eater. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Thai Palace has one of the most fabulous won ton soups we’ve found in the region.
