Every once in a while, carnivores can get a big hankering for a messy plate of barbecued meat. When that happens to you, make a visit to Sacramento’s Texas West Bar-B-Que, a no-frills, no-nonsense establishment that’s all about (big portions of) slow wood-cooked meat. The interior of Texas West is small and plain, with red and white checkered tablecloths, wood and corrugated metal walls and an order-it-yourself counter. Pictures of Texas West owner Dino Vergolini with local sports and media celebrities cover the walls, and the aromas from the kitchen are marvelous. Dig into the tender “Western-style” pork spareribs and chewy, flavorful beef brisket, or the ultra-moist, alluringly smoky chicken – you won’t be disappointed. All barbecued items are served dry (without sauce on them), and come with a side of the kitchen’s thick, sweetish barbecue sauce—that way, everyone can put on exactly the amount they want. In addition to the kitchen’s “BBQ Platters,” patrons can order up a sandwich (the hot BBQ turkey is great), burger, or even a BBQ burrito wrap (the meat of your choice wrapped in a flour tortilla and topped with melted cheese, barbecue sauce, green chilis and red onions. Sides include the slightly sweet and beery BBQ beans and cole slaw; and, parents—here’s some good news: kids eat free on Monday and Tuesday evenings (with the purchase of an adult-sized meal). - Kira O'Donnell
