editorial profile:

Sacramento fans of the Food Network’s outlandish chef Guy Fieri have their very own restaurant in which to swoon over their favorite culinary star. Tex Wasabi’s, located on Arden Way, is owned by the blonde, spiky-haired Fieri and, according to enthusiastic waitstaff, he drops by on a regular basis. It is perfectly okay, however, to visit Tex Wasabi’s even if you’ve never heard of Fieri, though you’ll get to know him during your meal, as a huge wide-screen television in the dining room broadcasts Food Network episodes featuring the fiery chef. The restaurant’s food theme—characterized by its website as “the whimsical melding of two disciplines, sushi and B-B-Q…with a California twist”—strikes me as just about as zany as the chef who envisioned it. However, patrons seem to relish the very eclectic menu, which features an enormous and very interesting appetizer list, a handful of salads (you have to love the name “Hidden Chicken, Crouching Salad”), soups and sandwiches (try the margarita chicken sandwich, whose tequila-lime marinated meat is laid atop crispy onion straws) in addition to the barbecued and sushi items. Popular items include the chewy-sweet smoked pork ribs and the BBQ Brisket Platter, a half pound of dry-rubbed beef brisket that’s house-smoked with hickory and cherry woods. Sushi rolls veer from the recognizable (the Chef Carl’s Roll contains maguro, ebi, avocado, cucumber and sesame seeds) to the downright barbarous (the Screaming Gobbler’s contents include roasted turkey, jalapeños, pepper Jack cheese and mayonnaise). The lower portion of the restaurant is dominated by an enormous bar, half of which is sushi bar, the other half traditional plunk-your-elbows-down-for-a-cold-libation bar. As you might imagine, wacky cocktails and “shooters” are a big deal at Tex Wasabi’s. (Feeling frisky? Try the “PB & J” shooter: Stoli Razberi, Chambord and Frangelico.) Upstairs is the cavernous, dimly lit dining area, dominated by a beautiful stone fireplace and filled with shiny, varnished wood tables. Lively and entertaining, Tex Wasabi’s certainly offers up a dining experience to remember. — Kira O'Donnell
