editorial profile:

If you’ve had a glum day or are simply seeking a convivial, uplifting experience, make a trip to Taylor’s Kitchen. Located in Sacramento’s lovely Land Park neighborhood, the bistro is a recent extension of Taylor’s Market, a beloved grocery institution established the 1940’s. Rough brick walls, earthy concrete floors and fresh flowers on the white tablecloths lend charm to the snug space, whose focal point is the sleek open kitchen, which juts out of one corner of the room. Patrons can sit at a counter wrapped around the kitchen, which provides an entertaining front-row view of the evening’s food production. Taylors’ chefs are lucky to have access the Market’s beautiful meats, specialty foods and produce, and menu items reflect the quality for which the Market is known. The kitchen offers just a handful of appetizers and salads, which are always interesting—on one visit we devoured two large handmade raviolis with fanciful scalloped edges, prettily stuffed with creamy squash and drizzled with a sage-scented butter; and another evening, I savored a radiant artichoke-green garlic soup. Seafood is treated expertly at Taylor’s (if you see scallops on the menu, order them) and expect meat entrées to be hearty and flavorful. Memorable selections I’ve enjoyed include an indulgent mountain of garganelli pasta, drenched in a rich cream sauce punctuated with chewy, gorgeously smoky bits of duck; and a rib-sticking, definitely upscale burger with grilled onions and gorgonzola cheese. Desserts are always creative—a couple of recent offerings were a baked Alaska “beehive” (composed of sponge cake, papaya ice cream, toasted meringue and marzipan); and jasmine rice pudding with caramelized coconut chips and a Port cherry compote. Taylor’s is a cozy, welcoming spot, and single diners will be as warmly welcomed and cosseted as the boisterous family groups and chatty business associates that squeeze into the small space every Wednesday through Saturday evening. — Kira O'Donnell
