editorial profile:
If you’re yearning for a culinary adventure, make a dash over to downtown Sacramento’s Tandoorie Wok, which offers up some of the most refreshingly different restaurant fare in the region. Owner Yadvendra Sharma has dreamed up a menu of exuberant cultural fusion, blending Indian, Latin, Italian and Chinese ingredients and cooking techniques into a fascinating mélange of menu items. Just reading the menu will make your head spin, and will no doubt elicit a giggle or two. How about trying a Salvadoran quesadilla, filled with Indian-style “tandoorie” chicken; a masala marinara spaghetti; or the intriguing Man Chow Soup” (“ . . . hot with musky flavors of dark soy”)? If the confusion of fusion is too overwhelming for you, the menu kindly includes a raft of straightforward, traditional Indian and Chinese entrées such as the succulent lamb boti kabab (lamb chunks marinated in yogurt and broiled in a clay oven) and the Chinese shrimp fried rice. There’s a wonderful collection of soups, from the corn, potato and chicken chowder (“an Indianised version of an American favorite”) and the hot and sour soup (“perfect to brighten up a dull moment”). We certainly experienced no dull moments at Tandoorie Wok, where we devoured an excellent enchilada—stuffed with tandoorie chicken and served with brown beans and rice, and the fiery, complex kabuli channa masala, a thick garbanzo bean stew simmered with turmeric, coriander seed, garlic, chilis and ginger. The interior of the restaurant, with its vivid yellow and red walls and black ceiling, is windowless and feels peculiarly cave-like. The tables are draped in striking red and black fabric, and the air practically pulsates with lively, mouth-watering aromas. If variety is truly the spice of life, then Tandoorie Wok is certainly the spiciest restaurant in downtown Sacramento. — Kira O'Donnell
