editorial profile:

A comfortable and well-established East Sacramento restaurant, Sweetwater has a loyal following of patrons who enjoy its friendly, casual bar scene and solid, dependable menu items. The restaurant is a great spot to view local artists’ work—its walls are covered with an ever-changing array of colorful paintings that are always fun to view. The back (and windowless) dining area is very dimly lit, even during the day, and is dominated by an enormous fireplace whose warmth and light are very welcome on cold, grey days. The front dining room, which looks out onto busy J Street and flanks the restaurant’s convivial (and sometimes noisy) bar area, offers a cheerier environment with its abundance of natural light. Traditionalists and more adventurous diners will both be satisfied by Sweetwater’s surprisingly lengthy menus—at lunch, one can find a hefty hot pastrami sandwich and Southern-fried chicken strips alongside bison meatballs (with a Mediterranean yogurt sauce) and a spicy, South American-inspired chimmichurri steak wrap. Dinners range from the popular balsamic-glazed meatloaf (prepared from fresh-ground lamb, beef and pork) and baked California sea bass to the intriguing cherry-Zinfandel pork ribs, served with a crunchy jicama slaw. The restaurant also offers a Sunday brunch, featuring items such as the kitchen’s “California Benedict,” a toasted croissant piled with avocado, tomato and poached eggs (and drenched with Hollandaise sauce and chipotle crème fraiche); and buckwheat-blueberry pancakes. — Kira O’Donnell

Insider tip: If you like sampling small plates, Sweetwater has a wonderfully varied selection of appetizers. Customer favorites include the spinach-artichoke dip and the shrimp potstickers, accompanied by a zesty sesame-chili sauce.
