editorial profile:

Sushi Cafe is hidden deep within a small row of retail establishments virtually invisible from busy Alhambra Boulevard. And while it’s very easy to pass right by the restaurant without knowing it’s there, we suggest you figure out where it is and go visit it. The cafe has a beautiful, elegant interior, with a faux blossoming cherry tree in the back, adding a riotous splash of pinkness, and a far wall adorned with an enormous, colorful painting depicting a group of young geishas. Sushi Cafe serves as a quiet, visually appealing oasis for East Sacramentans weary of making the trek across town to Mikuni or Zen Sushi, and also happens to have some of the yummiest vegetable and shrimp tempura in town. The kitchen’s edamame (boiled green soy beans) often arrive with ice cubes tumbled amongst the beans so they stay cold as patrons eat them, and the lengthy sushi roll list will make everyone happy. An enticing “combination fish” roll, festooned with slices of raw tuna and salmon, harbors deep-fried shrimp, snow crab and avocado and is finished off with gleeful squirts of spicy red and orange sauces. The “911 spicy crab” roll is another winner, generously sprinkled with crushed tempura. Some of the more intriguing menu items at this pretty little restaurant include an “Ahi poki,” chunks of Ahi tuna marinated in a Hawaiian-style sauce, and deep-fried jalapeño peppers stuffed with snow crab and albacore tuna. Sushi Cafe also offers a nice selection of donburi (traditional rice bowls) and noodle soups. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: The Cafe’s sushi chefs are extremely friendly and attentive. Ask them for a sushi recommendation if you’re flummoxed by the menu.
