editorial profile:

Searching for a classy spot to take that all-important first date? Check out Suede Blue in Roseville, an elegant, comfortable restaurant serving up excellent fresh seafood and a wide variety of interesting meat dishes. Suede Blue’s soft, dusty grey-brown walls, low lighting, beautifully upholstered booths and striped carpet create a sophisticated ambience perfect for romance or an upscale business luncheon. Waiters are clad in fitted vests, tables are swathed in white tablecloths, and the handsome, circular bar is a great place to meet up for a pre-meal cocktail. Nibblers will appreciate the kitchen’s wide array of appetizers—from filet mignon carpaccio (served with chopped egg, capers, red onions and garlic toast) to lobster pierogies (sour cream dough dumplings stuffed with lobster, avocado, goat cheese and scallions, then pan-seared in butter). Seafood is a big deal here, and the options are elaborate and rich. Don’t miss the wonderful pistachio- and almond-crusted sea bass, served atop plump pearl cous cous and flanked by “melted” leeks and wild mushrooms; and the meaty Dungeness crab and avocado “tower” (in the salad section) is another winner. If you like calamari, order the succulent, tender Monterey calamari steak, which has been cut into strips, seasoned and fried with red onions and peppers. Carnivores will revel in items like the steak au poivre (a New York steak rolled in cracked peppercorns and finished tableside with a brandy peppercorn sauce) and the grilled Berkshire pork, basted with a maple cider glaze. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: Vegetable lovers will be pleased with Suede Blue’s assortment of side dishes, which include cauliflower au gratin, creamed spinach, steamed broccoli and “sizzling mushrooms.”
