editorial profile:

If you’re seeking some conviviality with your next seafood meal, Scott’s on Fair Oaks Boulevard is just the ticket. This popular restaurant is one of the few chain restaurants in town that feels like a true neighborhood establishment. With one of the chummiest (and busiest) bars in the area, Scott’s is the kind of restaurant you can visit when you’re by yourself, plop down on a bar stool and make a few buddies as you work your way though one of the kitchen’s enormous crab Louis salads or plates of upscale seafood. If you come with others, request a table in the tranquil rear of the restaurant—the other two seating options are in a rather isolated, semi-private room behind the bar (which basically cuts diners off from the rest of the action); and an area directly behind the hostess stand, which suffers from a crowded feeling and gusts of cold air which blow in every time someone opens the front door. The lunch menu is more casual than dinner, offering no-nonsense items like the halibut fish ‘n chips and a fat burger served up on a sourdough bun in addition to more luxurious dishes such as the briskly-selling (and very rich) Dungeness crab ravioli with a pancetta and tomato ragout. However, dinner is all about sophisticated seafood—diners will discover tasty and creative items like the char-broiled Scottish salmon, drizzled with a “melted” leek and Candy Cap mushroom vinaigrette and accompanied by three little sweet potato blinis and a earthy clump of braised red chard; and the macadamia nut-crusted Alaskan halibut. Other recommended items include the enormous, fragrant cioppino (a portion large enough for two diners) and the kitchen’s fabulous rock shrimp and pork potstickers. Scott’s ambience is elegant enough (white tablecloths! pretty artwork!) to justify dressing up and bringing someone important (boss, in-laws, that gal you’re trying to impress), and you can expect to enjoy a good meal with warm, friendly service. — Kira O'Donnell
