editorial profile:

If you’ve got a craving for a smoky mouthful of ’cue, Sandra Dee’s is the place to find it. The meaty, drool-inducing aroma smacks you down the minute you enter Sandra’s front door—it’s clear these folks aren’t fooling around. Grab a seat at one of the restaurant’s plain tables and relax into the sultry jazz beat as you focus on your menu, which features far more than just barbecued pork and tri-tip. Southern-inspired dishes are a big deal at Sandra Dee’s, and lovers of deep-fried food will go gaga over the kitchen’s Southern-seasoned catfish, snapper and frog’s legs. The most delectable deep-fried item, however, are the stellar chicken wings: spackled with a zesty dry rub, the meat is incredibly moist and delicious (and they’re even tastier when dipped into a container of Sandra Dee’s sweet, smoky barbecued beans). There’s also a selection of sandwiches and salads (the shredded chicken on the Caesar salad is fabulous), but, honestly, why eat a hamburger or sausage link sandwich when you can get down and dirty with one of Sandra Dee’s dinner combos? Order barbecued pork loin, pork ribs, whole or half chickens and tri-tip, in any combination you fancy, and you can choose the heat level of the meats’ thick, sweet sauce. All combo dinners come with your choice of Sandra’s sides, which include collard and mustard greens (slow cooked with smoked turkey), hush puppies, string beans and a very kid-friendly version of macaroni and cheese. The restaurant isn’t fancy, and the sinuous bar, padded with a plastic leopard skin print, will make you giggle, but Sandra and her cooks are serious about barbecue. They also happen to make a damn fine sweet potato pie, so save a little room for dessert. — Kira O'Donnell
