editorial profile:

Everyone knows that the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op is the best place in town for organic groceries and fresh, locally grown produce. The Co-op has it all—great cheeses, breads and a dizzying bulk section with grains, cereals, and legumes that many of us have never seen before. It even has an excellent, small wine area in the back with an intriguing selection of libations. But the hidden gem in this wonderful store is its deli, which gets packed to the rafters during lunch with business-clad folks seeking a healthy, nutritious meal. It’s actually open all day, starting at 7 a.m., and early risers will appreciate its brisk coffee, eye-opening fruit smoothies, and delectable assortment of just-baked pastries, sourced from a variety of local bakers. Don’t miss the crusty almond croissants or the berry scones—they’re some of the tastiest I’ve tried. The Co-op not only offers an appealing selection of sandwiches, it also has a hot buffet with an ever-rotating selection of belly-warming goodies (if you see the free-form tofu lasagna or garlic-roasted broccoli, definitely try ’em) and a generously stocked salad bar for veggie lovers. Other yummy items, which can be taken to go or consumed in the deli’s sunny, no-frills dining room, are the black bean enchiladas; the hearty pot pies, and the flavorful turkey meatloaf. There’s also a huge selection of salads (we adore the basil-asiago chicken salad), and recommended sandwiches include the Turkey Wrap (with spinach, artichoke hearts and roasted red bell peppers); and the “Total Veg Out,” crammed with a long list of healthy things, including grated carrots, tomatoes, avocado and sunflower seeds. This is food you can feel virtuous eating. — Kira O'Donnell

Insider tip: If you’re a brownie lover, the co-op has several different kinds that will knock your socks off.
