editorial profile:
Swanky restaurants abound in Roseville, yet some of the city’s finest dining establishments are located modestly in their shadows. Such is the case with Ruen Thai, a first-rate eatery snuggled quietly in the shopping center housing Crush 29, one of Roseville’s most ambitious and high-end restaurants. Simple and serene, this little family-owned restaurant offers a surprisingly large selection of very fresh-tasting items. The menu is divided into stir-fries, curries, seafood items and rice and noodle dishes, and it takes a while to plow through the various offerings. While you’re pondering, snack on the delicious, cold Ruen Thai rolls, crammed with noodles, strips of chewy tofu, carrots and lettuce, dipped in a thick and peanutty sauce—they’re as refreshing as a cold shower on a sweltering day, and the perfect start to a complexly flavored Thai meal. Not-to-miss stir-fried items include the fabulous, spicy pad prig khing moo, chewy sliced pork with soft green beans, immersed in a fiesty housemade chili paste; and the pad ma kuer, meat of your choice stir-fried with chunks of eggplant, bell pepper and basil leaves. If you’re a curry lover, order the kitchen’s roast duck curry, a knock-your-socks off mélange of coconut milk, chili paste, tomato, pineapple and fresh basil leaves. There’s crusty, whole deep-fried fish (pla lard prig), traditional shredded green papaya salad (som tum) and savory pad thai noodles for the kids—in short, something for everyone, plus a little more. The restaurant also offers a very nice selection of wine and beer (both Thai and domestic microbrews). Service can be a bit slow, but it’s well worth the wait. — Kira O'Donnell
Insider tip: If your youngsters are bored, show them the enormous fish tank at the back of the restaurant.
